Essex golfers win ELGA’s PING grand final
2007 Winners Cynthia Hollingsworth and Megan Ball
Essex golfers Cynthia Hollingsworth and Megan Ball scored a one shot win in the Grand Final of the PING Ladies’ Four Ball Better Ball Tournament of England 2007, ELGA’s national competition for women club golfers.
The pair from Colne Valley returned a four-under par net 68 at the Marriott Forest of Arden Hotel, Golf and Country Club in Warwickshire.
Their score pipped teenagers Laura Watkins and Vicky Shepherd from Bicester in Oxfordshire, who were clubhouse leaders on net 69 for a considerable time. Third place went to Kim Jackson and Carole Ryder from Tytherington, Cheshire, who shot two-under par net 70.
The champions are an established pairing who began playing together back in 2002 when Cynthia was the ladies’ captain at Colne Valley and Megan was her vice captain. They’ve played in the national final of another better ball competition but this is their biggest win to date.
Over 14,000 women entered the club qualifying rounds of the tournament with 864 going forward to compete in six regional finals, which were all held at Marriott venues. Forty-eight pairs qualified for the Grand Final.
“Megan and I are absolutely chuffed to bits to win this,” said Cynthia. “Megan played out of her socks and I felt I was the supporting act!”
It was Megan’s score which went down on each of the first nine holes but Cynthia made her contribution on the back nine where the pair had impressive net birdies on the 15th, 16th and 17th before signing off with a par three on the challenging 18th hole.
They were both on good form coming into the competition and had each been cut a shot in their last club competition. Megan now plays off 20 while Cynthia’s handicap is 13.
Bicester teenagers Laura Watkins, 17, and Vicky Shepherd, 19, were watched by both sets of parents and, for nine holes, their club manager, as they set the early pace in the final. They were steady on the way out before coming home in three-under 34 helped by two net eagles and a birdie.
Afterwards they shrugged off the disappointment of finishing runners-up and Vicky, who plays off 18, said: “It’s really good to come second out of all those people.” Laura, a five handicapper, is her club’s ladies’ and junior champion and has just been selected for the Welsh girls’ squad. She also won a PING driver after taking top prize in the “target driving” competition on the range.
Tytherington’s Kim Jackson and Carole Ryder made some valuable putts in their two-under net 70. “We love the medal format,” said Kim. “It keeps you on your toes, you have to keep going and there’s always an interest.”
Carole is a five-handicapper who has played for Cheshire while Kim is an 11-handicapper.
ELGA tournament secretary Emma Lowe congratulated all the players for reaching the grand final from an initial tournament entry of over 14,000. PING Europe’s managing director John Clark added: “We are absolutely delighted to be involved in this competition. We are proud to support this event and will be working with ELGA to keep this on the calendar for more years to come.”
Players at the Grand Final also had the opportunity to enter a number of other competitions for PING prizes. As well as the target driving competition there was a putting challenge won jointly by Dierdre Randall of Hartney Witney, Linda Bowden of Bowood, and Maureen Nicholson of Wilmslow who each received a Karsten putter. The nearest the pin competition on the 18th was won by Fran Davies of The Mendip who received a driver.
In addition, the competitors were able to try the latest PING equipment on the driving range, including previews of the new ladies’ Rhapsody range. PING fitting technicians were on hand to answer any questions.
All the Grand Finalists received a PING Collection windshirt and a pair of ECCO shoes while the winning pair at each regional final had each received a PING golf bag. Jaguar also joined the sponsors of the Grand Final and displayed cars at the event.
The overall winners will hold the PING trophy for a year and also received prizes worth up to £500 (less the value of prizes won in an earlier round). Prizes were awarded to the second-placed pair to the value of £100 and to the third place pair to the value of £50.

PING Championship update
All PING entries have now been received and the ELGA team are in the process of gathering all the information, preparing starting sheets and competitor information.
The top 72 pairs in each Region will qualify for their Regional Final. If you are not in the top 72 you will receive a letter informing you if you are on the waiting list or have not qualified.
All Competitors Lists and Starting Sheets will be put on the PING website under the relevant Regional Final. Those people on the waiting list will be able to see if they have moved up a place as we will update the list as soon as a pair withdraw.

The PING Ladies' Four Ball Better Ball Tournament of England costs just £1 per player to enter.
PING Collection will sponsor a grand final and the winners will receive prizes worth up to £500.
In addition, the 96 finalists will each receive, as part of a "goody-bag", a pair of ECCO shoes and PING Collection will provide an item of clothing for them to wear on the day.
The tournament starts with club qualifying rounds played between January and June, continues with Regional finals in August and September, and concludes with the grand final in October 2007 .
