2007 Winners PING Regional Final at Worsley Park (L to R: Maureen Nicholson and Linda Turner with ELGA Tournament Assistant Stuart Fowler)

Wilmslow pair win PING qualifier at Marriott Worsley Park

21 August 2007

Wilmslow golfers Maureen Nicholson and Linda Turner set an early winning pace in the latest regional final of ELGA’s national competition for club golfers, the PING Ladies' Four Ball Better Ball Tournament of England 2007.

They were first to tee off at Marriott Worsley Park Hotel and Country Club, Manchester, they came home with a net 69, two under par and SSS – and they were never overtaken.

Their closest challengers were another Cheshire pair: Terri Byrne and Mel Greaves, who represented Lymm Golf Club. Terri, who plays off 20, and Mel, a 10-handicapper, also scored 69 but they lost out on the top spot on countback.

Maureen and Linda came home in a net score of 33, three under par, while their rivals scored 36.

They lead eight pairs who qualified for the grand final of the competition at the Marriott Forest of Arden Hotel, Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, October 2.

The qualifiers, who all scored net 72 or better, all win a pair of ECCO shoes and a PING Collection windshirt to wear at the final.

“We’re really looking forward to the grand final – which is the day before my son’s 18th birthday!” said Maureen, who plays off 14.

The regional final was played in dry weather but recent rain affected playing conditions. “The course – which is lovely – was playing long and you needed good shots to get to the green,” said Maureen.

They enjoyed the better ball format and Maureen insisted; “My partner really did all the work – she played fantastically well and all credit to her.” Linda is an 11-handicapper.

Thirs place went to Sandra Messenger and De Ruddick from Workington in Cumbria. They were very steady and shared the scoring evenly, each contributing on nine holes for a net 70.

De started playing golf only a year ago and in January had a 36 handicap. She’s now off 26 and has formed a successful partnership with Sandra, who plays off 18.

“It’s fantastic to get through to the grand final, really exciting,” said De.

Many competitors took the oppportunity to visit the driving range during the day to try the latest PING clubs. They were also able to see a display of PING Collection clothing and to try on a selection of ECCO shoes.

This was the second of six regional finals which will decide the field of 48 pairs for the grand final at Marriott Forest of Arden. There, they will play for the PING trophy and the winning pair will also receive prizes worth up to £500 (less the value of prizes won in an earlier round). Prizes will be awarded to the second placed pair to the value of £100 and to the third placed players to the value of £50.
