2007 Winners PING Regional Final at Tudor Park (L to R: Sara Dunn and Stephanie Rath)
6 August 2007
Chelmsford golfers Sara Dunn and Stephanie Rath swept home to win the first regional final of ELGA’s national competition for club golfers, the PING Ladies' Four Ball Better Ball Tournament of England 2007.
They scored net 65 at Marriott Tudor Park Golf Club in Kent and claimed top spot among the qualifiers with a fantastic back nine. They played the inward half in net 30, six under par, and pipped Buckingham’s Jannine Stirrat and Yvonne Kemp on countback.
They lead eight pairs who qualified for the grand final of the competition at the Marriott Forest of Arden Hotel, Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, October 2.
The qualifiers, who all scored net 67 or better, all win a pair of ECCO shoes and a PING Collection windshirt to wear at the final.
Stephanie remarked afterwards: “My partner played very well, particularly on the back nine, but we were amazed to find we were so much under par. It’s just great to get through to the final.”
Her word were echoed by Buckingham’s Jannine Stirrat who said: “It’s going to be fantastic to go the Forest of Arden and to get the same service and treatment that we’ve had today. The course is lovely and the organisation has been great. You just can’t fault it.”
Third place went to Carol Bell and Linda Overend of Benton Hall in Essex who scored net 66, despite Linda suffering from a painful pulled tendon in one foot. They finished ahead of Cynthia Hollingsworth and Megan Ball of Colne Valley on countback.
“We gelled together really well and enjoyed the course. We were very steady, out and back in 33,” said Carol, who is ladies’ captain at her club. “We’ve had a brilliant day.”
They particularly enjoyed the format. “It’s nice to play something different. I think it’s a great format – and we should play more medal competition. It’s the true test of golf,” added Carol.
The shot of the day came from Sarah Cormac from Seaford Head in Sussex
who holed her tee shot on the 91-yard par three 7th.
This was the first of six regional finals which will decide the field of 48 pairs for the grand final at Marriott Forest of Arden. There, they will play for the PING trophy and the winning pair will also receive prizes worth up to £500 (less the value of prizes won in an earlier round). Prizes will be awarded to the second placed pair to the value of £100 and to the third placed players to the value of £50.
