2007 Winners PING Regional Final at Hollins Hall
24 August 2007
County Durham golfers Rachel Naisby and Lynn Beresford scored a two shot win in the latest regional final of ELGA’s national competition for club golfers, the PING Ladies' Four Ball Better Ball Tournament of England 2007.
Rachel and Lynn, from Wearside Golf Club, scored net 69, three under SSS, at Marriott Hollins Hall Hotel and Country Club in West Yorkshire.
They lead eight pairs who qualified for the grand final of the competition at the Marriott Forest of Arden Hotel, Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, October 2. “It’s very exciting,” said Lynn.
The qualifiers, who all scored net 75 or better, all win a pair of ECCO shoes and a PING Collection windshirt to wear at the final. Rachel and Lynn also each won a PING golf bag.
They prepared for the event with some serious relaxation in the hotel. Before they teed off they had a swim, a spell in the jacuzzi and steam room, a late breakfast and an hour with the newspapers and coffee.
It set them up perfectly. Lynn, who plays off 18, opened with two pars. Rachel, an 11-handicapper, finished with two pars. In between they each had a birdie.
“It’s a testing course, but very nice,” said Lynn, “We’ve played here before on golfing breaks and that might have given us a little advantage.”
Runners-up on 71 were Yorkshire county player Kimberley Crooks and her mum, Karen, from Saltburn-by-the-Sea.
“It was a brilliant day,” said Kimberley, 16, who plays off one handicap and is in the Yorkshire team for the County Finals next month. “I kept stringing pars and birdies together and mum came in on the other holes. It was really good. We were really pleaed when we finished.”
Karen, who plays off 29, has followed her daughter into golf and they’ve proved to be a successful combination with a host of local successes. “We’ve never been to a national final before and we can’t wait,” said Kimberley. “It should be really good.”
Among the other qualifiers are Seaton Carew’s Jane Longhorn and Mags Pearce who scored 72 and went through in fifth place.
Mags, who plays off 25, got them off to a quick start with a birdie three, net two, on the first hole. Meanwhile Jane, a six handicapper who plays in the Durham second team, wrapped matters up with a nice par on the 18th. “We played reasonably steadily and didn’t do much wrong . We kept it in play and got as close to a par as we could,” said Jane.
She added: “We enjoyed the format. Team golf is wonderful. Golf is normally such a selfish game that it’s lovely to be part of a team!”
Many competitors took the oppportunity to visit the driving range during the day to try the latest PING clubs. They were also able to see a display of PING Collection clothing and to try on a selection of ECCO shoes.
This was the third of six regional finals which will decide the field of 48 pairs for the grand final at Marriott Forest of Arden. There, they will play for the PING trophy and the winning pair will also receive prizes worth up to £500 (less the value of prizes won in an earlier round). Prizes will be awarded to the second placed pair to the value of £100 and to the third placed players to the value of £50.
