2007 Winners PING Regional Final at Breadsall Priory
11 September 2007
Matlock golfers Pauline Bramley and Mary Annable scored a narrow win in the latest regional final of ELGA’s national competition for club golfers, the PING Ladies' Four Ball Better Ball Tournament of England 2007.
They took the honours on countback from Hunstanton’s Sue Meadows and Angie Allsopp after both pairs returned net scores of 68 – four under par – at Marriott Breadsall Priory Hotel and Country Club, Derby.
They lead eight pairs who qualified for the grand final of the competition at the Marriott Forest of Arden Hotel, Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, October 2.
The qualifiers, who all scored net 70 or better, all win a pair of ECCO shoes and a PING Collection windshirt to wear at the final. Pauline and Mary also each won a PING golf bag.
Pauline and Mary are aiming to score a winning club double in the grand final of the competition. They want to follow in the footsteps of another Matlock pair - Shirley Kay and Jenny Knight – who won the 2006 inuagural event. Mary, who plays off 12, remarked: “Matlock ladies are very competitive!”
They’ve got a great record having previously reached the world final of an international pairs competition. “We do play well together, said Pauline, who is a nine-handicapper. “We both try very hard and are very focussed.”
They played steadily in difficult, windy conditions, returning net 34 on each half, and enjoyed the betterball medal format.
“It’s a very, very good competition and a medal is a true test of golf,” said Pauline. “An awful lot of clubs have got involved and it’s a smashing competition which can only get stronger.”
Hunstanton’s Sue Meadows, who plays off three, and Angie Allsopp, a 14 handicapper, dovetailed well during their round. They scored 33 on the way out but came home in 35 to end the day as runners-up.
One shot further back on 69 were Teresa Burgoyne and Jane McGifford, who are both members at Breadsall Priory and enjoyed the home advantage.
They slotted in well together with Teresa crucially scoring a net eagle three on the 7th and a birdie on the short 17th. She plays off nine.
“We’re absolutely delighted to reach the final and very excited,” said Jane, who plays off 26. “We’ve had a wonderful day, everything has been very well organised and we thought the betterball format was excellent.”
Girton’s Margaret McCall played the shot of the day with a hole-in-one on the 114-yard 6th hole but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to take her pair through to the grand final.
During the day, many competitors took the oppportunity to visit the driving range to try the latest PING clubs. They were also able to see a display of PING Collection clothing and to try on a selection of ECCO shoes.
This was the last of six regional finals to decide the field of 48 pairs for the grand final at Marriott Forest of Arden. There, they will play for the PING trophy and the winning pair will also receive prizes worth up to £500 (less the value of prizes won in an earlier round). Prizes will be awarded to the second placed pair to the value of £100 and to the third placed players to the value of £50.
